At the Intersection of "starving artist" and "chronic pain" lives a Beautiful Darling of a Dame who's tougher than a Silk Strand and still smoother.

If you've seen her Perform twice, you've probably seen her high on painkillers at least once. She's wittier when she's high and pain free, but she looks forward to just being Witty and Well.

When Macho Motorcycle Men dismay at the fact that she rides Motorcycle in the winter she quips back, " Riding motorcycle in the Rain, That's Easy. Riding with a full blown ovarian cyst, now that's Hard!"

Theatre: The Toe Cutter One of TiTRaw's Fringe One-Acts

THEATRE IN THE RAW PROUDLY PRESENTS ITS VANCOUVER FRINGE FESTIVAL DEBUT

with three tasty original one-acts featuring a radio reading of The Toe Cutter by Bill Pollett.

Top: Toe Cutter cast members Kate Laktin, Serge Savoy, Delana Russell. Bottom: Olesia Shewchuk and Zi Paris. Photo: Steven R. Duncan. For more photos go to: http://www.flickr.com/photos/9057324@N08/sets/72157601742333635/show/

High res photos available upon request.

Pollett’s The Toe Cutter portrays a family’s battles with a deep secret that won’t go away. A tragic incident occurs to a family of girls, the memory of which will not go away without a chilling struggle that leaves its mark on a small quiet Saskatchewan town.

The Toe Cutter is an original radio play reading from our current Mythical Voices for Our Time play project. The play was premiered with a live radio broadcast on Vancouver’s Co-Op Radio’s The Arts Rational program - CFRO 102.7 FM in June, 2007. “…collectively excellent performances…” Beyond Robson website.

This dark and powerful production is just one of 3 original one-acts happening over 6 nights from September 9th to 16th – two shows alternating each night.

Theatre In the Raw will be part of the Vancouver Fringe Festival for the first time in its 13 years of producing theatre in Vancouver.

Also presented will be Paul Manuel Kane’s Duet In the Park - the winner of TITRaw’s 2005 One-Act Play Writing Contest; and one of the company’s most performed one-acts, Patrick Foley’s, You Are What You Eat (developed out of the Carnegie Theatre Workshop/Community Centre) will be revived once again.

Theatre In the Raw started out of a storefront cafe called La Quena Cafe on Commercial Drive, in 1994. They rehearsed and performed there for nearly three years, producing over 125 one-acts in over 43 nights of theatre within a period of time. While housed at La Quena they applied for and received a Canada Council Exploration grant, allowing the theatre to go on two tours along the Squamish corridor and Sunshine/Sechelt coasts. There was an outdoor theatre day of 16 performances at Grandview Park with the help of a Vancity Credit Union community grant. They raised a tent along with a wooden stage, and had over a thousand people come and see a full day free of Theatre in the Park. They have since performed in over 45 venues both in the southern/interior half of British Columbia and in Seattle, Washington for the 1998 Seattle Fringe Festival.

Since 1997, they moved toward mainstage performance work. Their mainstage plays usually consists of two to three acts with a show run of 2 to 4 consecutive weeks. They are also committed to organizing mini-tours, in and out of the Lower Mainland of BC for many of their dramas. This gives the actors, running crew, and administration members of the company greater experience with the nuts and bolts of running a semi-professional travelling theatre company. It allows for quality, risk-taking artistic works with substance. They have produced nine full-length mainstage plays. Five were revived classical plays and they premiered four original Canadian play works in Vancouver.

The work results in groundbreaking fresh theatre. Theatre In the Raw… rises to the occasion…has notable successes…” The Georgia Straight.

All Fringe performances are at the AGRO CAFÉ on 1363 Railspur Alley - Granville Island; tickets to all of the theatrical evenings are $10 and $12 (in advance) are thru the Vancouver Fringe Festival box office. For a complete schedule, please check out our website www.theatreintheraw.ca, or phone the Theatre In the Raw office number at (604) 708-5448, or call the Vancouver Fringe office: (604) 257-0355 for further information, including synopsis of other plays.

Literary: The Bone Cage

You are invited to join author Angie Abdou at our store (1391 Commercial Drive) August 29th 7:30 pm, to launch her new novel, The Bone Cage.

Advance Praise for: The Bone Cage

“Through Sadie and Digger, Abdou captures the heroic quests of these hopeful Olympians in all their gritty pain and glory. Sequences describing Digger’s wrestling matches and Sadie’s grueling sets of lengths are vivid, intense, and authentic. . . . The Bone Cage is well paced and readable, memorable for its fresh perspective on the lives of athletes and the obstacles they must overcome.”

Quill and Quire

“Original, visceral, emotionally alive, Angie Abdou's first novel is illuminated by her many clever takes on the divided ways our culture looks at bodies . . . this engaging first novel also brilliantly catches not only the perils and trials but also the disciplined shimmer of the life of a champion swimmer.”

Buster Keaton's Steamboat Bill Jr. (1928)
Saturday, September 1

Set on the Mississippi River in the old side-wheeler days, Steamboat Bill Jr. follows the adventures of a spoiled young man forced by his crusty father to learn the ropes of river boating. The film's crowning achievement is its hurricane climax.

Eye of Newt provides a touching and beautiful live soundtrack that brings this comic masterpiece to life.

Henrik Galeen's Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (1922)

Nosferatu is that rare creature, a truly frightening and disturbing horror epic. An unauthorized production of Bram Stoker's work Dracula, the legal heirs didn't give their permission so the names had to be changed. But this wasn't enough: The widow of Bram Stoker won two lawsuits in which she demanded the destruction of all copies of the movie, however copies of it were already too widespread to destroy them all.

Featuring the renowned improvisational musicians, The Silent Summer Nights Monster Orchestra.

Happy Birthday Wyckham!

This turning into a stellar year, for Victoria-born Commercial Drive resident, Wyckham Porteous.
Recently his label, Cordova Bay Records, announced the UK release of Please Please Me, Wyckham Porteous (distributed in the UK by Pinnacle Distribution). If the title seems familiar, well that's because it's a cover version of The Beatles smash hit of 1963. Except, you've never heard it like this before! The single has been produced and arranged by no less a music business legend than Andrew Loog Oldham, former manager of The Rolling Stones, and MD of one of the first British Independent record labels, Immediate. Andrew Oldham worked with The Beatles in their early days, and his recollection of the recording of Please Please Me was that the song was originally composed as a ballad, in tribute to the great Roy Orbison. Hearing the obvious qualities in the song, the band's esteemed producer George Martin nonetheless encouraged the band to whip up the pace, until it became the defining Merseybeat anthem we now know and love. In the spirit of the song's original incarnation, however, Oldham has took the song back to its gentler tempo, adding layers of plangent steel guitar, pizzicato strings and tasteful sitar, whilst Porteous contributes a vocal of aching poignancy and deep emotive appeal, and the result is one of the most striking reworkings of a Beatles song ever.

The Wyckham Porteous version of Please Please Me has already caused quite a stir on UK radio; when Bob Harris and Mark Lamarr (deputising for Jonathan Ross) played a 'white label' copy of the single on their respective radio shows late last year, Porteous' website received over five hundred hits, with browsers demanding to know where they can get a copy. Well, with the final UK release of this truly magnificent single, those wishes will be finally fulfilled.
rarely straying from the West Coast of Canada ("The sole pinprick of temperate weather in all of Canada"), Wyckham Porteous realized very early in life that his path would be that of a writer and in particular a singer/songwriter.

"I knew I had to be a songwriter. I knew I wanted to sing. But, The beach bum - Wyckham enjoying the beach at Cordova Baywhere I was living, there was no Nashville, no Tin Pan Alley, no L. A., there was really no place to put your focus."

So he played a lot of festivals. He did his songs in the clubs. He logged a lot of miles. He did everything he was supposed to do. And finally, his break came when he wrote and starred in the hit play Joe's Cafe which enjoyed an extended run at Vancouver's prestigious Arts Club Theatre. Soon afterward, more out of romance than design, he and his long-time partner Patty Fraser, well known for her work in live theatre, wrote and performed a very cool radio play brimming with songs about these journeys for the nationwide Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC). Well, the CBC loved it... and everyone that mattered seemed to have tuned right in. Soon, an angel financed an '89 album that was picked up by Bryan Adams' management firm, and charted Top 20 on Canadian radio. Leading to a 17-song CD, independently distributed in Canada, and a slot on Rod Kennedy's Kerrville Festival, down Texas way......

Read his full bio here...

Wyckham Porteous will release his new album, '3 AM' on August 20th.

Happy Birthday Alejandro!!

I just wanted to pass on this little note i received from the founder and co-host of the World Poetry Cafe, Alejandro Mujica-Olea (seen here with co-founder Ariadne Sawyer, which I found to be inspiring. Today is his birthday.

Tomorrow I complete 60 years.

Good evening another time and welcome to the fantastic world of poetry with Ariadne Sawyer.

And at the technical board, Medi.

Your host and poet, Alejandro Mujica-Olea, will turn 60 years old, tomorrow, the 8th of August,2007.

Some of these periods of my life have been like an earthquake.

After an excellent youth, with a profession, stable work, married with one son and with great political possiblities.

My life brought me the first bite.

It has been 34 years since I was tortured and damaged psychologically which lasts until today.

My life was worthless and I could have been assasinated by the facist soldiers at any time.

Later I lived in the liberty that Canada brought me, and another blow knocked at my door.

There has passed 25 years from the day in which it was discovered that I had cancer and was given

3 months of life to work.

This diagnosis was confirmed by the US, Cuba, the Soviet Union and Germany.

I have lived 25 years and have ten times this fatal illness, only 3 years ago I had it again

and I was in danger of losing my life. Thanks to God, the treatment of vitamins and a vegetarian

lifestyle has saved my body of copper sheath..

This is the treatment that is in my book: Your Love Killed My Cancer, by World Poetry Publishing.

I will celebrate my 60 years in a Tibetan Buddist temple with a special ceremony and refreshments.

This will be good since I want to reflect on the past and think of the future.

“My soul is happy

I sing, laugh and recite poetry.

I am content to live

in this ocean of Earth.

white, green and gold.

Oh Canada

(Qoute from page 179, Contentment from Your Love Killed My Cancer.)

Judge won't reopen pizza case

Owner lied about income from Commercial Drive pizzeria

Neal Hall, Vancouver Sun

Published: Saturday, August 04, 2007

VANCOUVER - A Commercial Drive restaurant owner's application to reopen his divorce case has been dismissed after an earlier trial resulted in the man being ordered to pay his ex-wife about $1.2 million, plus $14,368 per month in child support.

In a judgment released Friday, the judge found that Marcello Lombardo, who owns Marcello Pizzeria, repeatedly lied and misled the court about his income -- he now admits the pizzeria had sales of $2 million last year.

Special Event: Mindful Pain-Coping Class

When we are visited by pain, it can often be difficult to deal with. North American culture teaches us that pain equals suffering and encourages us to cope by turning automatically to drugs. Though pain in life is pretty much inevitable, suffering can be a path we choose (or don't choose).

Aimee Sturley invites you to a one-hour introduction to mindful pain-coping. The class will cover six different styles of mindfulness practice from breathing in awareness to exploring the edges of pain. This is a free class and you will be able to take away useful tools that you can put to work in your life without further instruction ( i.e. this class is not a loss-leader; I don't want to sell you more classes or anything of the sort!).

What: One-Hour Mindful Pain-Coping Class
Time: 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Date: Tuesday, August 14, 2007
Where: Please RSVP for location (Commercial Drive area)
Who: Aimée Sturley is mentoring and a mish-mash of her friends are invited to attend
Cost: Free!

Please RSVP to drivegirl@gmail.com or call Aimée at 604.288.8608.

Looking forward to sharing this with you!

Be well,

Aimée
