News: Fire on Commercial Drive Sends One Person To Hospital

EAST VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - A building fire has shut down several blocks of the Drive this evening. Vancouver fire crews were called to a 2nd alarm blaze in a suite above the Kokopelli hair salon. Battalion Fire Chief Fred Crouch says it was fully involved when they arrived.

"The top floor has one single suite, it had three residents living in there, all three got out safely. One of the victims has gone to hospital for a check-up for smoke inhalation, but at this time he appears to be fine actually."

Crouch says the suite was gutted and the hair salon suffered smoke and water damage. Crews expect to be there for some time tonight mopping-up. There's been no word on a possible cause.

Capers Donates $42,000 to MOBY to Build a Playground

by Capers Team

Vancouver, B.C., September 17th, 2007 - Canada’s leading natural and organic food retailer, Capers Community Market, has donated $42,000 to My Own Back Yard Community Association (MOBY) community gardens on Commercial Drive.

Capers gives back to local communities through support of local non-profit organizations whose programs create more vibrant neighbourhoods and positively impact their surrounding areas. This year, proceeds from Capers’ 12th Annual Living Naturally Fair – a two-day family community event where sustainable and organic vendors, natural health experts and non-profit organizations create a festival and farmers’ market at the Robson Street store’s parking lot – were donated to MOBY.

MOBY is a non-profit society, representing the collective voice of hundreds of residents, businesses and community activists in the Broadway and Commercial Drive area intent on cultivating and sustaining healthy community interaction through its first food-focused garden at 11th Ave and Commercial Drive, just behind the Broadway SkyTrain station.

With the generous funds raised from the Living Naturally Fair, MOBY will build a playground area and community meeting place on a derelict piece of land, directly across from the MOBY Community Garden. The greening of urban brownfields in Vancouver neighbourhoods is an action that MOBY whole-heartedly supports. By beautifying physical spaces and creating events that invite social interaction, MOBY encourages cohesive, flourishing connections between neighbours. Through civic engagement, MOBY encourages positive elements of transformation that resonate far beyond our own back yard (http://www.myownbackyard.ca).

Committed to the community, Capers’ Living Naturally Fair has raised more than $356,000 to support local non-profit organizations since 1996.

Theatre In the Raw opens to a Standing-Room-Only Fringe Crowd!

The cast of "You Are What You Eat": Roger Howie, Maria Lakes, and Kevin Sloan.

TITRaw Fringe debut was met with wild applause and a room full of smiling faces at the Agro
Café last Sunday night.

Remounting Patrick Foley’s funny and relevant “You Are What You Eat”, and premiering Manual Kane’s poignant “Duet in The Park”, the “little company that did” has taken “community” theatre to a whole new level and has introduced Vancouver theatre goers to some outstanding local talent.

“You Are What You Eat” features TITRaw veterans Roger Howie, Kevin Sloan and Maria Lakes. The shining star has to be Howie, who has a face like Silly Putty, which he moulds into countless, great comedic expressions. Sloan and Lakes both have to work hard to keep up with Howie’s relentless delivery, and they do. I completely related to their two characters in that type of situation: being cornered by someone who won’t shut up and feels it’s his right to proselytize regardless of whether the other parties are interested or not.

Foley’s script covers a lot of socio-economical and ethical ground, talking about the industrialized food chain we are the end-users of. I thought that setting the play in a café was brilliant; after all, when you think about it, it’s at a restaurant that we are most divorced from our food. We only want to see and enjoy the food, not think about where it came from.

The other one-act, “Duet in the Park” is an intimate tale about two young women – Bubbles, a prostitute caught under her vicious pimp’s thumb, and Florabelle, a “retard” (as the other kids in the foster home she’s left called her) - who find themselves lost together on the same park bench.

Bubbles and Florabelle (played by Julie Cohn and Edwina Cheer respectively) are charming and frank characters who seem destined to run into each other’s arms. The actors do a great job of fleshing out two roles which could easily become stereotypical.

By the way, Cohn looks great in her superhero knee boots and ultra mini-skirt! I mention this only because if you don’t get there early and get a seat up front, you’ll miss out – which is my only complaint about the production. With no raised stage or raked seating, the audience further back gets a slightly limited view of the show.

That aside, I loved the ensemble cast and the intelligent, deceptively simple story-telling.

If you have the chance, come out and see these shows. They alternate nightly with TITRaw’s other darker drama, a radio play by Bill Pollett, “The Toe Cutter”. You can listen to a short audio clip of it which was produced at CBC studios at http://ourmedia.org/node/348623.

Commercial Drive - Live! hits 10,000 Visitor Mark!

You read it right! http://thedriveisalive.blogspot.com has now had 10,000 visitors since it’s first post back on January 8th, of this year and the count just keeps climbing!

Clicking back through the archive, I’m amazed at all the great stories, amazing people and incredible places this little blog has covered.

I feel very fortunate to be part of such a creative, intelligent community. Thanks for helping Commercial Drive – Live! reach this landmark and keep checking us out as we climb even higher!

By the way, I’m starting a brand new feature – the “Drive Tune of the Week”! Every week I’ll try to feature an mp3 or video from musicians/bands who make the Drive their home base. It will be a simple direct link. (I don’t want to host the files so get it online and then send me the link). If you send me a bio and a picture too, or a link to your site, I’ll put it up on the blog, as well. Let all your musical friends know about this absolutely free promotional offer. Our first Drive Tune is “Bohemian Man” by Monica Lee, recorded live at the Libra Room. You can find the link in the blog’s right-hand sidebar under the Amazon link.

Hope you have a happy and safe Labour Day weekend!

Sincerely,

Steven R. Duncan

New Campaign to Save The York!

By ETHAN RIBALKIN, 24 HOURS

A group of Vancouverites want to make sure one of the city's oldest theatres is preserved and reopened to entertain its neighbours in East Vancouver.

Located at 639 Commercial Drive, the 500-seat York Theatre was purpose-built in 1913 as a live entertainment venue by architect John Y. McCarter, who later designed the Marine Building.

The theatre has been on the market since last fall.

"Presently, my main concern is to make sure it is preserved as a theatre and not changed into something else," said Tom Durrie, the task force organizer.

"I'm just afraid someone is going to make an offer and turn it into a Super Value or a Wal-Mart."

The task force Durrie has assembled includes Bard on the Beach artistic director Christopher Gaze and Early Music Vancouver executive director Jose Verstappen. The group is putting together a business plan for the theatre's restoration in hopes of attracting investment to bring the theatre back to life.

Durrie wants concerned citizens to urge the city to preserve the York Theatre by e-mailing mayorandcouncil@vancouver.ca.

Commercial Drive - Live! spoke to Jhayne Holmes, who also had a bid in for the historic theatre last February, "I support Tom completely? I'm glad it's happening."

For more information, Durrie can be reached tdurrie@telus.net.
