Theatre: Theatre in the Raw Connects Today's Youth With Vancouver's 70's Flower Children

Cast of Yippies in Love (Clockwise) Steve Maddock, Rebecca Shoichet,
Artistic Director Jay Hamburger, Music Director Bill Sample, Bing Jensen, Danielle St. Pierre.
It's forty years since the "Invasion of Blaine" and other politically charged antics by local "Yippies" - members of the movement fathered by Abby Hoffman on the East coast primarily to oppose the Vietnam War - and playwright Bob Sarti, worries that the hard won victories his generation fought for may be in danger of being short-lived in light of current socioeconomic attitudes and climates.
With "Yippies in Love", the much anticipated prequel to the 2008 smash hit "Bruce: The Musical". Sarti, a Vancouver Sun reporter when the plays were set, has taken it upon himself to seek out and workshop the play with young people from East Van's Purple Thistle, a youth-run community centre for arts and activism.
"It's important for young people to know that many of the freedoms and challenges we - as a society -are facing today were first brought to light by the Yippie movement.
"Workshopping the play at the Purple Thistle was important to me," Sarti says. "Because i think the Thistle has that "Yippie spirit" and because I wanted to be sure this play has relevance today, too."
The music for this production was once again scored by BC Entertaiment Hall of Famer (and Drive Denizen) Bill Sample, who worked recently with returning star Steve Maddock in the Vancouver Playhouse production of The Fantastiks. Audiences familiar with that production will also recognize Bree Grieg as one of the chorus and taking on several of incidental roles in the show.
Rehearsals are well under way and the show is set to run March 17 - 27 at the Woodwards Sky Room near the site of the notorious Gastown riots (commemorated in Jeff Wall's mural in the Woodwards Atrium).

Theatre: Review - Marion Bridge @ Havana

Rebecca Husain, Jeanie Cloutier and Terri Anne Taylor,
cast of Daniel MacIvor's poignant Marion Bridge.
Theatre of Infinity’s Marion Bridge is a play by Daniel MacIvor about the complex relationship of a family brought together through loss. We watch three sisters who couldn’t be more different from each other, not only cope with a dying mother, but also start to deal with who they have become themselves. Each search to sort out the loneliness that has come to rule her day-to-day life as well as not-so-forgotten family expectations. Whether through alcohol, religion or soap operas, each sister has found their own way of coping with their broken past and escaping the prisons they feel their lives have become.
Headstrong failed actress Agnes, played by Terri Anne Taylor, is the black sheep who grudgingly returns home to Cape Breton from the Big Smoke. She holds a deep seated resentment towards her mother for making her put her child up for adoption when she was a teen.
Seeing this homecoming as a chance for a life do-over, Agnes manages to shake the family tree at its roots in the process.

Taylor's best scene is an intimate card game with her despondent younger sister Louise (played by Rebecca Husain), which felt incredibly authentic and gave her character more wisdom and maturity than MacIvor's script would have led us to believe she possessed to that point.

The self-admittedly strange and boy-like Louise is sincerely and aptly played by Husain, who sustains a precarious balance between humor and tragedy with her character, and like her fellow cast mates, is riveting in her monologue.

Finally, Jeanie Cloutier commands her role as Theresa, or "Sister Theresa", as Agnes calls her. Theresa is actually waiting to enter a convent, asking God to deliver her from her beast of burden life.  The spinsterly elder sister seems to fit the name on the home-front, too, becoming her parent's custodian while trying to hold together a family poised on the brink of disintegration.

The dying mother is never seen yet is ever-present. Because of her disease, she communicates by way of cryptic post-it notes, and as the story unfolds, it becomes evident she still manages to hold a great deal of sway over her daughters and their fortunes.

While the play doesn't break new ground, this version comes at a fitting time for many people experiencing the same process of watching their parents age and die and taking notice of the growth and even rebirth it can bring.

Under veteran actress Susan Hogan's direction, the show moves steadily and makes good use of its talented cast.

As an odd aside, there are a set of keys which, though never talked about, somehow become like a character in the play itself. This is a play with umpteen entrances and exits by all actors through the set's front door and every time they did, the keys were removed or replaced. I had to wonder and marvel at the coordination of this continual persistent detail, having been backstage enough times to be fully aware of the chaos which can ensue because of a misplaced prop. It can be a real focus-breaker for actors.

This production does its best to make good use of Havana's shallow stage, its limited Technical capabilities and an obviously minuscule budget. But what the play lacks in production values, it makes up for in heart and spirit - quintessential small theatre.

Marion Bridge runs until February 19 at Havana Theatre @  1212 Commercial Drive.

Tickets can be purchased online at http://bizbooks.net/biz-marquee/marion-bridge-tickets

Theatre: Wired @ the Culch Feb 5 - 8

Damien is unnoticed in his cliquish grade, and that’s just the way this shy, self-proclaimed “goof” prefers it. Damien is jacked into a cooler version of himself through online role-playing games, social networking sites, and a multitude of virtual friends. But when he has a seemingly innocent run-in with a girl at school, Damien finds himself in the cross-hairs of a humiliating cyberbullying campaign. Just because it’s virtual makes it no less real. The online, alternate world he created to escape to is now something he needs to escape from.

Theatre Terrific's All Sorts Just One More Triumph For True Comeback Kid! Sept. 10-13!

Mute, blind and in a wheelchair, Chris Kozma was not expected to live after being hit by a car that put him in a coma for three months.

Four years later, Chris is now walking and talking, but with difficulty and he struggles to be understood.

Before the accident Chris was a semi-pro skateboarder and an apprentice in sheet metal work. He can't skateboard now, or participate in his other favourite sports - although last Thursday night not only marked his debut as lead in Theatre Terrific's latest production, it was also the first time Chris attempted to ride a bicycle since the accident.

Never one to shy away from a challenge, Chris came in 2007 to check out the company’s Summer Fringe Camp, now in it’s 6th year.

"I loved it. Everyone was so nice, and they understood me."

After seven weeks traveling to Vancouver from Surrey for twice weekly classes, followed by eight performances, Chris and his speech therapist noticed a change.

"I'm more confident now in my speaking. [Also] I don't back down when confronted."
His hard work has paid off, and Chris performs a leading role in All Sorts, this year's newest Fringe festival Production from the inclusive theatre company.

Chris' story is not all that different from the rest of the cast in this diverse troupe of actors, most of whom struggle daily to be understood and respected. His performance in All Sorts as "The Man", an outsider, mirrors his own life in many ways.

All Sorts, which opened last Thursday to a standing-room only house, is a humorous look at alliances and group identity.

All Sorts runs September 10th – 13th at the Vancouver Japanese United Church (Victoria Drive at 23rd Ave).

Our world is full of 'all sorts'.” Artistic Director Susanna Uchatius commented. “All sorts of people with all sorts of hooks, styles, beliefs and identities. Why is there allegiance? When is there dissension? Is there room in our world for 'all sorts'? What would the world be like without the spice of 'all sorts'?”

All Sorts manages to mix it up and boil it down, with lots of hilarity along the way.

Award-winning composer Joel DeStefano, has created a quirky score of jazz, hip hop and new age, to underline the divergent interests of the “Polites” versus the “Anarchists” and the “Happy” people. His enthusiasm for the project shines through: “I love working with Theatre Terrific… the performers are up for anything so I get to try new things.”

The script and concept were created by director Susanna Uchatius, with input from the cast, DeStefano and assistant director Michelle Bruce.

Formed in 1985, Theatre Terrific is Western Canada’s oldest theatre company for people with disabilities, with a mission is to provide inclusive opportunities to transform lives through the power of theatre.

Remaining performances take place September12th and 1 3th at 8:00 pm, with a matinée on September 13th at 2:00 pm. All shows are presented at the Vancouver Japanese United Church, Victoria at E. 23rd Avenue. Tickets are $10 - $12, for advance tickets add $2. A one-time $5 Fringe membership is required and can be purchased at any Fringe performance, or through the Fringe. To order online go to www.vancouverfringe.com. For ticket information call 604.710.7435.

Theatre: All Sorts Opens Tonight

Start the Fringe off right with a night of All Sorts, a Theatre Terrific production opening up tonight at the Japanese United Church.
From left: Katie Grey, Ruben Castleblanco, Spencer Lee, Sindy Angel, Alex Edwards.

A humorous look at alliances and group identity. All Sorts runs September 4th – 13th at the Vancouver Japanese United Church (Victoria Drive at 23rd Ave).

For this year's Fringe showcase, Artistic Director Susanna Uchatius directs a diverse group of 16 performers from across the Lower Mainland, creating the perfect 'all sorts' cast to question life's perceptions, wink at our assumptions and unearth some truths. Like its candy counterpart, All Sorts has both sweet and dark sides. As always; the work is 'one of kind', and will perhaps mystify, but is sure to delight and touch audiences of all ages.

"Our world is full of 'all sorts'." Susanna commented. "Why is there allegiance? When is there dissension? What happens when the walls are broken?" The script and concept were created by director Susanna Uchatius, with input from the cast and Joel DeStefano.

Award-winning composer Joel DeStefano has created a evocative and engaging score of jazz, hip hop and new age.
Formed in 1985, Theatre Terrific is Western Canada's oldest theatre company for people with disabilities, with a mission is to provide inclusive opportunities to transform lives through the power of theatre.

Presenting their shows in East Vancouver, Theatre Terrific is a ground-breaking company gaining attention for their shows on the 'fringe of the Fringe'. Ed Farolan (Review Vancouver) called their 2006 production, SLOWrunning: "a simple yet perceptive script on time management. The actors … were excellent in their simplicity."

Performances will take place September 4th, 5th, 6th, 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th at 8:00 pm, with a matinee on September 13th at 2:00 pm. The Wednesday September 10th show is a two-for-one. All shows are presented at the Vancouver Japanese United Church, Victoria at E. 23rd Avenue. Tickets are $10 - $12, for advance tickets add $2. A one-time $5 Fringe membership is required and can be purchased at any Fringe performance, or through the Fringe. To order online go to www.vancouverfringe.com, for information call 604.710.7435.

Theatre: Bigger Than Jesus

MARCH 28–APRIL 7, 2007, 8 PM

March 31 & April 7, 4 pm matinee performances. No performance April 2

Vancouver East Cultural Centre

Created by Rick Miller and Daniel Brooks

Performed by Rick Miller

Directed by Daniel Brooks

Designed by Beth Kates and Ben Chaisson

Who was Jesus? Was he the Son of God or just another prophet? Bigger than Jesus begins with a 33-year-old man coming face to face with the Roman Catholicism ingrained in his youth. He leads us on a quest to understand the tremendous impact that a Jewish peasant from Galilee has had on the world. Through twelve interlocking character portraits (mirroring the 12 stages of the Passion), we confront varying interpretations of Christ and Christianity, and the often cavernous gulf between them.

This challenging new one-man show features the trademark humour and intelligence of actor/playwright Rick Miller. Live video projections show off Miller’s facial expressions, Daniel Brooks’ clever staging, and the play’s innovative design. Bigger than Jesus has wowed audiences across Canada, the US, Germany and Italy. Christians and non-Christians alike will find plenty of philosophical points to chew over, as well as virtuoso performing and staging to enjoy. Visit www.BiggerThanJ.com to learn more.
