Music: Pawnshop Diamond

Was just sent an email from Pawnshop Diamond's lead singer Katie Ormiston about their new video shot locally and featuring jewlery designer Jesse Turner. Check it out below. Katie's letter follows.

Hello everyone!

I am writing to share with you the latest of my doc-style music videos. This latest is a peek into the life of our dear friend and extremely talented jewelry designer - Jessie Turner. Pawnshop Diamond serenades the lovely Jessie as she hand-makes a piece from her new Open Heart Collection. Please check it out! And make sure to let me know what you think:) It was my first time using a tri-pod. Very proud of the steady hand I am. It is 3 minutes long.

If you are interested in learning more about Jessie Turner, she will be selling her wares at the following craft shows:

Circle Craft

November 11 - 16

Vancouver BC

www.circlecraft.net

Eastside Culture Crawl

November 21 - 23

Vancouver BC

Studio 426 - 1000 Parker St

www.culturecrawl.bc.ca

Her jewelry can also be found at the following stores in Canada. http://www.jessieturner.ca/stores.php

In other Pawnshop news, the band had photos taken by Fiona Garden http://www.fionagardenphotography.com on Sunday as part of the Songbird West Songwriting Contest we won a while back. The photo shoot was more fun than to be expected thanks to Fiona and we look forward to putting them to good use with the new upcoming CD - Leaning to the Sun.

Our CD Release Party is set for Dec. 5 at the Grandview Legion in Vancouver - details to follow. We are very proud of the new album and can't wait to share it with you. For a sneak preview, check out the songs on our myspace page. Link below.

To quote the wall in Jessie's studio:

"If nothing else, believe in art."

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Katie

Music: Artic Tour Kickoff

ARCTIC Tour Kickoff Party
at
Cafe Deux Soleils
w/ Fraser Mackenzie
Saturday, September 20
9pm, $5
All ages & licensed venue

Another ARCTIC expedition is about to launch - the independent Vancouver-based band is ready to explore Canada for their second month-long expedition in a year, starting with a tour kickoff party at Cafe Deux Soleils in Vancouver on September 20.

The band itself is already as cross-Canadian as can be. With the three members hailing from Yellowknife, NT, St. John's, NF and Kelowna, BC, their diverse influences and experiences emerge from some of the furthest and most isolated corners of this country. These influences combine in unexpected ways: progressive rock, jazz, industrial rock merge with ambient textures and acoustic singer/songwriter melodies to create something fresh, unconventional and intriguing that has been dubbed "acoustic trance", "psychedelic folk", and "Metric meets Neil Young".

Find out more about the band at http://www.projectarctic.com or http://myspace.com/arctic.

Music: Monica Lee CD Release Party Feb. 21

"Live @ the Libra Room"

I'm very excited by the arrival of this CD. I've been fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Monica on occasion over the last few years when I booked a couple of corporate events.
Her voice, style and range of music is delightful.
This is the consummate Commercial Drive CD! Recorded at the epicenter of the Drive, the Libra Room, where the Monica Lee Band has been playing for 2 years on Thursdays.

Backed by Jesse Waldman (who is currently artist-in-residence at Lime this month), and Mark L'esparance, Lee is definately a musical force to be reckoned with, and her Caribbean- influenced Drive anthem, "Down on the Drive" will forever be a favorite of mine.
Don't miss this fun night, and if you do, at least buy her CD!!

John Korsrud will be sitting in on Trumpet (oh ya!) and some other special guests as well!

Music: Puro Son digs Cuban roots

From The Georgia Straight

By Ken Eisner

The ceiling is low, the sound system is muffled, and the lighting is murky at Commercial Drive’s the End Café, where Miguelito Valdes and his band, Puro Son, play most Saturday nights. But when Valdes puts his shiny trumpet to his lips the sound infiltrates every corner of the room, and the dancers—already twirling like dervishes—go into a salsified frenzy.

A young Cuban who has quickly made a mark on the local music scene, Valdes has racked up a remarkable number of achievements in the past decade and a bit. For a jazz musician playing a vernacular style, he hit the mother lode early, playing with the Buena Vista Social Club while still in his 20s.

Music: The Artist Formerly Known As Jane Siberry at the Cultch

Issa (formerly Jane Siberry)

Buy tickets

REGULAR ADVANCE TICKET PRICE: $36 PLUS S/C

More than twenty years after her first musical release, Canadian songstress Issa (formerly known as Jane Siberry) has become renowned both for her hauntingly beautiful music and for her compelling performances. With eleven major recordings, three books of poetry, her own independent label and the acclaim of her peers and fans alike, Issa continues to redefine herself as one of Canada’s most creative singer-songwriters.

Her lyrical, thought-provoking songs have appeared in films and television; her now classic Calling All Angels duet with k.d. lang appeared in Wim Wenders’ Until the End of the World, and more recently her work was heard on the soundtrack for television’s Six Feet Under. Issa has recorded with Bryan Ferry, k.d. lang, Indigo Girls and Peter Gabriel. This is the first time she will perform in Vancouver as Issa.

Commercial Drive - Live! hits 10,000 Visitor Mark!

You read it right! http://thedriveisalive.blogspot.com has now had 10,000 visitors since it’s first post back on January 8th, of this year and the count just keeps climbing!

Clicking back through the archive, I’m amazed at all the great stories, amazing people and incredible places this little blog has covered.

I feel very fortunate to be part of such a creative, intelligent community. Thanks for helping Commercial Drive – Live! reach this landmark and keep checking us out as we climb even higher!

By the way, I’m starting a brand new feature – the “Drive Tune of the Week”! Every week I’ll try to feature an mp3 or video from musicians/bands who make the Drive their home base. It will be a simple direct link. (I don’t want to host the files so get it online and then send me the link). If you send me a bio and a picture too, or a link to your site, I’ll put it up on the blog, as well. Let all your musical friends know about this absolutely free promotional offer. Our first Drive Tune is “Bohemian Man” by Monica Lee, recorded live at the Libra Room. You can find the link in the blog’s right-hand sidebar under the Amazon link.

Hope you have a happy and safe Labour Day weekend!

Sincerely,

Steven R. Duncan
