Special Event: 14th Annual Stone Soup Festival ‘celebrating our global food community’

Britannia Community Centre is pleased to announce another great Stone Soup Festival bringing community together in celebration of food, the environment and community itself.
More than ever, people are aware of the issues of food security, the benefits of sharing resources, and eating ‘local’.
Stone Soup will celebrate the global diversity of food, the environment and its importance to the ‘culture’ of our community.
In the spirit of celebrating our global food community, Britannia is working to build a more inclusive and diverse festival with even more food security information tables, food venders, artists, musicians, and presentations.
This year, they are especially pleased to partner with the Multicultural Family Centre in bringing the Fiesta de las Madres (Mothers Day Festival) to Stone Soup in celebration of the food and cultural traditions of Latin America.
Additional features at this year’s Stone Soup include:
● Special presentations by the UBC Farm, Raising Backyard Chickens, and Robin Wheeler, author of “Food Security for the Faint of Heart”.
● Buen Provecho! – Cookbook Launch and Photo Exhibit: Buen Provecho! is an intergenerational project involving Britannia Latin American Youth and elders from the Multicultural Family Center to collect food recipes and stories representing the food stories and traditions of Latin America.
● Art works that will include the theme of food, environment and recycled materials from neighbourhood artists. Works will include jewellery, textiles, collage, ceramics, paintings, stationary, concrete works, photography and more!
● Miscellaneous Productions presents “POWER”, an interactive performance by culturally diverse youth on issues of importance in youth lives
● Stanley Park Cozy Project: Artist Shirley Wiebe invites you to participate in a collaborative artwork that will be installed along the South Creek Path in Stanley Park. Participants will be inscribing vine maple “cookies” that will then take the form of a giant afghan that will be draped over a 10 foot high stump of a Douglas Fir tree.
● The Lost and Found Puppet Company with Maggie Winston who will tell the Stone Soup Story.
● The Arts of Resistance from Tundra to Tropics: A forum in conjunction with Stone Soup with artists Haruko Okano, Joyce Majiski, and social activist Erika Del Carmen Fuchs who will address the social and artist resistance to globalization, the extinction of corn as a principal food group, climate change, GMO, bio-fuel, migration and dislocation. Wed. April 22, 7 -9pm

Life and Death mix and mingle at the Parade of the Lost Souls, which will be returning on Commercial Drive at Grandview Park.

Parade of the Lost souls is a lively commemoration of the cycle of existence and deceased, and of facing fears in order to live life to its fullest. The performers are the audience, willing spirits who have come together to pay tribute to the departed and to celebrate the brilliance of life. Skeletal Brides, blessed witches, ghastly ghouls, and prancing pixies mingle side by side with everyday people. By the light of the radiant moon, processions of costumed stilt walkers, jugglers, dancers, and musicians lead spectators on an entrancing passageway through the neighborhood. The evening features shrines, fire performance, supernatural beings, and dancing in the street.

News: Voters to decide on $23-million Trout Lake reno

Months of lobbying paid off yesterday for Trout Lake residents as Vancouver city council voted unanimously to find $23 million for long-awaited renovations of their threadbare community centre.

The project was added to the city's 2009-2011 capital plan that will be put on the ballot during the November municipal election.

If voters approve the plan, it will still be up to the next council to ensure the work is carried out as budgeted.

Britannia Meetings

Britannia Centre directors will continue to mull whether Britannia Rink should be a hockey practice venue during the 2010 Winter Olympics.

The controversial matter is on the agenda for tonight's 6 p.m. board meeting. Directors are expected to deal with "continued development of questions for VANOC and City of Vancouver."

The board voted May 14 to delay its decision until VANOC submitted a formal proposal that includes information on costs and the impact of security on the Commercial Drive neighbourhood. It may be an exercise in futility because VANOC's board decided May 21 to examine other sites for hockey practice sessions.

Defibrillators coming to Vancouver community centres

A pilot project to put defibrillators in some Vancouver community centres is scheduled to begin just weeks after the death of a hockey player.

Richard Pytel, 37, died on Sunday of an apparent heart attack while playing hockey as part of a fundraiser at the Britannia Centre rink on Commercial Drive.

Pytel stepped off the ice to make a phone call, then collapsed. Help came almost immediately, but it was too late.

"Several of the participants, including a fireman, used CPR. The pool staff came over and five minutes later the ambulance staff was here," said Enzo Guerriero, executive director of Britannia.

News: Britannia/VANOC Deal Called Necessary For Arena

The skating rink at the Britannia Community Centre is in desperate need of repair even without the help of the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games, says Britannia executive director Enzo Guerriero.

Guerriero said last year the centre's board of directors approached VANOC with a deal for it to help pay for upgrades to the arena. In exchange the rink would be used as a hockey practice facility from Jan. 28 to Feb. 28, 2010.

News: Olympic opponents rule Britannia meeting

VANOC needs a bigger carrot on a hockey stick if it wants to use Britannia Rink in 2010.

A majority of those who attended a Monday night public meeting want the Britannia Community Centre board to turn down a proposal to host Olympic hockey practices at the community arena near Commercial Drive. Ironically, 20 speakers were against and only 10 for the proposal. Most of the advocates were teachers at Britannia secondary school, but three were involved in the local minor hockey association.

Visual Art - Pastel Demonstration with Minaz Jantz

Local artist Minaz Jantz will be putting on a Pastel Demonstration coming up on the weekend Sunday April 27 @ 2:00pm in the Britannia Library which she will be introducing the wonderful features of pastel in creating art works. She will have a slide show of various stages of creating a painting and styles featuring historical works of arts. Jantz will also bring samples of pastels and surfaces for individuals to hand touch for themselves the quality and character of pastel.
Currently her pet portrait art show is still up in the Britannia Gallery in the Britannia Library until May 2.
