BOOK TALKS - BOOK CLUB
Join us for Book Talks book club! We will be discussing a preselected book each month, with the occasional session reserved for a discussion on a theme. Bring your favorite passages, points of interests, and share your reading experiences with us. Each person is responsible for either borrowing or buying their own copy to read. This is an open book club. Drop ins are welcome.

Literary: Award Winner Haley is a Renaissance New Media Artist

Stimulating and directing cultural fulmination is as natural to Heather Haley as manipulating media. She is an innovative programmer with a history of staunch commitment to the arts community and cultural awareness. 

With a strongly held conviction that artists, especially poets, needed to be represented on the World Wide Web, she founded The Edgewise Café in 1994, one of Canada's first electronic literary magazines, along with the non-profit arts organization, the Edgewise ElectroLit Centre. 

The EEC facilitated the Vancouver Videopoem Festival and Telepoetics, a videoconferenced reading series founded by Merilene Murphy. The Edgewise ElectroLit Centre's populist mandate and innovative programs effectively made poetry accessible to all and assisted Canadian artists in expanding both their audience and potential. 

Since 2004, Haley has been the host and curator of the Visible Verse Festival, North America's sustaining venue for the presentation of new and artistically significant poetry film and video. www.heatherhaley.com 

Haley and several other local literary figures of note will be honored at a ceremony on August 24, 2012, at CBC Studio 700. She then takes the stage the following day at Trout Lake with almost 90 other writers and performers for the Summer Dreams Literary Arts Festival. 

 As one might expect, putting on a big event with 3 stages, a children's area, a market place and 90+ performers is a lot of work, so the more help the festival can have the better. Volunteers are needed. It’s a great way to meet people and learn more about event planning and Vancouver's vibrant writing community. Nikki Reimer is the author of [sic](Frontenac House, 2010) and fist things first (Wrinkle Press Chapbook, 2009). She is a poet, blogger, curator, arts event planner and photographer of cats in East Vancouver , and a member of the Kootenay School of Writing collective.

Sandy Shreve is the author of Suddenly, So Much, (2005, Exile Editions) has published 3 other books of poetry and edited two anthologies. Her work is widely anthologized,
has won the Earle Birney Prize for Poetry and has been short-listed for the
Milton Acorn People’s Poetry Award and a National Magazine Award.

Shannon Rayne is an accomplished performance poet and storyteller who has facilitated
creative writing workshops for over five years. She is the workshop facilitator
at the Fearless Writers Circle in Vancouver 's vibrant Downtown Eastside and
has led writing and performance workshops in elementary and high schools in the
Greater Vancouver area and in cities across the country when on tour.

April 16th (National Poetry Month-Special Guest): Evelyn Lau

Evelyn Lau’s first poetry collection, You Are Not Who You Claim (1990) won the Milton Acorn People’s Poetry Prize; her second, Oedipal Dreams (1992), was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award, making Lau the youngest person ever nominated for this prestigious prize (she was 20). Her poetry was selected for inclusion in Best American Poetry. Lau is also renowned as a prose writer. Her autobiographical Runaway: Diary of a Street Kid was published when she was 18 to worldwide acclaim. Over 100,000 copies have sold in Canada alone, and the book was published in 11 other territories. Her searing and arresting fiction—Fresh Girls and Other Stories, Choose Me and the novel Other Women—has been sold in the U.S. and around the world. Now in her early thirties, Evelyn Lau (Vancouver) is one of Canada’s greatest young literary talents. Treble, her fourth book of poetry is everything we expect of Lau: it is precise, elegant, honest and powerful. Lau explores “how people relate to each other, the things they reveal and the things they hide, their struggle for love and their spurning of it.”
