Russell Broughton is an emerging stone sculptor from the U.S.  He first discovered direct stone
carving about thirty years ago while studying in the medieval village of Lacoste in southern
France.  He graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York in 1983 and went to
work for the British interior designer Mary Gilliatt.   He now make his home in Vancouver, where
he has take up stone carving again.  

His sculptures are  an articulation of some of the images that have been percolating through
his mind for the past couple of decades. Some of the early pieces evolved from the natural shape
and consistency of the stone.  What emerged were ovoid organic forms with a few distinct edges
evoking the tension of a seed or pod on the verge of bursting.  Over time these pod forms have
given way to  more anthropomorphic sculptures. Some pieces retain their pod shapes, but also
reference pre-christian mythologies.  Broughton’s  working process is a combination of planning
and spontaneity, developing general ideas using sketches and styrofoam models. The final design
arrives through the carving process.

As individuals living in multicultural Canada, where no strict religious doctrines are imposed upon us, it is the task of the individual to seek out and define their spiritual beliefs. We have the opportunity to be exposed to diverse cultures, to draw customs from our own heritage, and to combine or reinvent our own unique rituals from all these influences. Whether we choose to gather for our rituals or perform them in solitude, these age-old practices continue to evolve in contemporary society.
Avenue for/des Arts is a Vancouver-based, non-profit, community arts group that has been presenting art exhibitions, events and workshops for over 25 years.

UnCouth – a conversation with youth

Thanks to generous funding by a local community member/artist, the raw
talents and expression of east side youth have come together for the
exciting Britannia Art Gallery exhibition, UnCouth.

Over the past six weeks, the Britannia Teen Centre has been UnCouth’s
creative hub. Youth from various nearby schools, Britannia Outreach,
Britannia Secondary, 8J9J, and Streetfront have come together once a
week to collectively work on pieces for the upcoming show in June.
Youth involved responded to the term UnCouth -- that which is uncommon,
mysterious, or awkward (among other definitions) -- through their
chosen mediums and in keeping with the messages they wanted to
communicate.

Visual Art - Pastel Demonstration with Minaz Jantz

Local artist Minaz Jantz will be putting on a Pastel Demonstration coming up on the weekend Sunday April 27 @ 2:00pm in the Britannia Library which she will be introducing the wonderful features of pastel in creating art works. She will have a slide show of various stages of creating a painting and styles featuring historical works of arts. Jantz will also bring samples of pastels and surfaces for individuals to hand touch for themselves the quality and character of pastel.
Currently her pet portrait art show is still up in the Britannia Gallery in the Britannia Library until May 2.

WHAT MAKES AN EXHIBITION

Artists and the general public are often unaware of what a curator’s role and
responsibilities are. Here is an opportunity for everyone to explore the wide range of
approaches to developing and mounting an exhibition.
This presentation is based on the mandate of the Britannia Art Gallery which is a
community based gallery serving those in its catchment. Its territory extends from the
south shore of Burrard Inlet to Broadway Street and from Main Street to Nanaimo Street.
Although we begin based on the curator’s role at Britannia Art Gallery much of the
information and discussion is relevant to understanding the development of exhibitions
in other galleries, museums and exhibition venues.
Sylvia Oates is the founding curator of the Britannia Art Gallery that was created in
the early 90’s. She is a visual artist in her own rights. A long standing active member
of the Britannia Community Centre she is also the manager of the Britannia Centre’s
Banner Project.
Haruko Okano is the present curator taking over from Leah Decter in 2005. Okano is
an established interdisciplinary artist who received her curatorial training through the
Grunt Gallery’s 2 year internship. She has worked as an independent curator creating
exhibitions for The Harrison Festival of the Arts, The Alliance of Pacific Visual Artists
and organizing and touring her own artwork.

Artists, community groups, artist collectives and schools....this is for anyone living or having a studio in the gallery catchment's territory. The area stretches from the south shore of Burrard Inlet to Broadway, from Main Street to Nanaimo Street.

Restrictions are no imagery that has explicit sexuality, nudity or overt violence. Public health and safety must be taken into consideration as the space is also part of the Britannia Library where children have access to the gallery.
Submission criteria, Application forms and gallery floor plans are available at the Britannia Information Centre. Just ask the receptionist for copies.
Information brochures are also on the newsstand in the library.
