Literary: Award Winner Haley is a Renaissance New Media Artist

Stimulating and directing cultural fulmination is as natural to Heather Haley as manipulating media. She is an innovative programmer with a history of staunch commitment to the arts community and cultural awareness.
With a strongly held conviction that artists, especially poets, needed to be represented on the World Wide Web, she founded The Edgewise Café in 1994, one of Canada's first electronic literary magazines, along with the non-profit arts organization, the Edgewise ElectroLit Centre.
The EEC facilitated the Vancouver Videopoem Festival and Telepoetics, a videoconferenced reading series founded by Merilene Murphy. The Edgewise ElectroLit Centre's populist mandate and innovative programs effectively made poetry accessible to all and assisted Canadian artists in expanding both their audience and potential.
Since 2004, Haley has been the host and curator of the Visible Verse Festival, North America's sustaining venue for the presentation of new and artistically significant poetry film and video. www.heatherhaley.com
Haley and several other local literary figures of note will be honored at a ceremony on August 24, 2012, at CBC Studio 700. She then takes the stage the following day at Trout Lake with almost 90 other writers and performers for the Summer Dreams Literary Arts Festival.
As one might expect, putting on a big event with 3 stages, a children's area, a market place and 90+ performers is a lot of work, so the more help the festival can have the better. Volunteers are needed. It’s a great way to meet people and learn more about event planning and Vancouver's vibrant writing community. Those interested can sign up on The website at www.summerdreamsfest.com. For more information about the festival, including complete directions and line up, check out our website: www.summerdreamsfest.com or email srduncan@shaw.ca or call 604-788-8340

LOTD: IGNITE! Sets The Cultch On Fire

IGNITE! Sets The Cultch On Fire

Every year, for one week, The Cultch is taken over and transformed by young people. Hundreds of youth are involved in what has grown to be Vancouver’s largest youth-driven arts festival. The festival includes showcases in music, dance, and spoken word, the world premiere of three one-act plays, a visual arts exhibit, variety shows featuring diverse forms of entertainment, and much more. All of this is created by local artists between the ages of 13-24. During the festival, IGNITE! events happen all over The Cultch’s facilities such as the Historic Theatre, the Vancity Cultre Lab, the main lobby and the café galleries.

Literally every aspect of the festival is youth-driven, produced by the Cultch’s Youth Panel. From media relations and promotion, to stage managing and running the lighting and sound boards, there are countless ways to become involved, whether on stage or behind the scenes. This year’s festival is taking place from May 14th to May 19th. Contact Youth Program Manager, Robert Leveroos, at robert@thecultch.com to learn more.

We sat down with talented 16 year old Lili Robinson, who not only spoke about the festival but gave us a taste of her work. She's performing in the festival's Tuesday night spoken word event.

By the way, did anyone get any good pics or video of the flash mob at Brit yesterday? If so, feel free to drop me a line at srduncan@shaw.ca and let me know.

Review: Poet Slams Slam Finals

Prominent spoken word artist CJ Leon wrote this frank review
There is something seriously wrong with the slam scene in Vancouver when even its flagship Slam Finals event, which filled the Rio Theatre to capacity last night, fails to inspire even its most enthusiastic patrons. It didn’t help that while one slam-masters’ name was chanted seven times throughout the evening, none of the performing poets’ names were even in the program! While I appreciate the work of organizers, I go for the art and the artists. Fuck the Vancouver Slam for continuing to go out of its way to anonymize the artists who make it what it is. Bad form! You gave us a 14-page program and didn't even mention the artists, let alone give us their bios and links. Fuck you and your egomania! The lighting of the venue was horrible: no spotlight, and I was told the cadaverous hue of the performers was caused by event organizers who wanted the headache-inducing bluish “cleaning lights” on so poets could read their poems. Boo! And since when do slam poets read? Gimme a fucking break! I didn’t pay $15 to sit in Walmart lighting.

Slam Poet Koyczan Bends 2 Billion Ears at Olympics

East Van spoken Word enthusiasts got an unexpected treat last night during the opening cerimonies of the 2010 Winter Games, when local slam poetry legend Shane Koyczan wowed the crowd with his inspirational poem "We Are More".  The ceremonies drew a record audience, thanks to the internet.  Here's another version of the poem compliments of YouTube.

For those of you on Facebook, my buddy Paul Fischer did a great video mashup using this piece.  Very worth checking out.

Special Event: Night of the Indies

For the April 15 event, Night at the Indies will be presenting RC Weslowski, a veteran performer and organizer of the Vancouver Slam Poetry scene. RC hosts the Vancouver Poetry Slam at the Café Deux Soleils. He can also be heard on Wednesday afternoons as a host of "Wax Poetic" on CFRO 102.7.
Also featuring will be Janet Panic as the music act this month. Janet is a local singer/song writer and will be coming after her highly successful appearance at the National Aboriginal Achievement Awards in Winnipeg, Manitoba in March. She has released the CD "The Girl Who Passed For Normal" and will be releasing "You Look Good Naked" sometime this summer.
The Short Film Slam will be continuing, where aspiring filmmakers can screen their short films with the audience choosing their favourite which will then screen at next month's Night at the Indies in Toronto. Veteran local independent artist John Pippus and his trio will bring their eclectic mix of musical styles to our stage. "I am really thrilled by the quality of acts that are joining us", local producer David Maidman expressed, "I am also excited to see how the Short Film Slam is playing out." Filmmakers are welcome to bring their short films (under 10 minute) on the third Wednesday with registration beginning at 8:00 p.m. Participation will be on a first come basis.
Night at the Indies was started over two years ago by Gurbeen Bhasin of Meow Films in Toronto, Ontario as a way of bringing together independent artists from various art forms in order to promote their talents and create a supportive community. After Night at the Indies' incredible success in Toronto she joined with David Maidman of Pumpkinhead Productions to bring this concept to the independent arts community in Vancouver.
The event consists of a spoken word act, a film screening and a musical act. "It is really great to see the audiences for the various art forms come together and support one another's efforts", said Gurbeen. "I became involved with Gurbeen when she decided to screen my film "Think Peace: Portrait of a 21st Century Movement" at one of her events and I was excited to see if Night at the Indies would fly in Vancouver", stated David Maidman.Held on the third Wednesday of every month at the Café Deux Soleils, 2096 Commercial Drive, Night at the Indies has featured such diverse talents as poets Stephen Lytton and Leigh Harris from the Downtown Eastside, author Betty Krawczyk, and musical acts such as Maria in the Shower, Mr. M and the Allnighters and Fuzzcat, as well as screening a variety of films. Special Event: Wax Poetic/Co-op Radio Fundraiser

Nestled mid-week between an alternative health program and a hiphop show, Wax Poetic has been holding its own since the early nineties, bringing some of the best and often most underappreciated spoken word artists from the local and international scenes, to CFRO radio listeners in a half hour “appointment with the muse”!

On Tuesday, April 7th, the poetry staple celebrates 16 years of broadcasting by inviting their guests and listening audience together for a special “real world” hook up on Commercial Drive, the undisputed cradle of spoken word in the lower mainland.

Wax Poetic is the longest running radio program dedicated to the spoken word in Vancouver (and internationally), heard every Wednesday afternoon from 2-2:30 pm on Co Op Radio 102.7 FM with hosts Diane Laloge, SR Duncan and RC Weslowski.

To keep in the spirit of live radio, the broadcasters will also be turning Café Deux Soleils into an on-air studio, recording a 30 minute show in front of a live audience for future broadcast. The “studio” audience is in for quite the treat, as none other than Vancouver’s first poet-laureate George McWhirter takes the hot seat, reading his work and fielding questions from the hosts and the crowd.

This will mark one of the last readings for the poet in his position as laureate. His two-year term ends soon.

Founded in ’93 by poet Diane Laloge and performance poet Justin McGrail, Wax Poetic has been airing almost every week since then.

Engineering and programming duties are shared by the two “rookies” on the team, Steven R. Duncan (9 years) and RC Weslowski (6 years). Weslowski (AKA Randy Jacobs) is a familiar voice on local commercial radio, while Duncan worked on a similar program at Simon Fraser’s CJSF prior to coming on board Wax Poetic.

Other feature performances at the fundraiser will come from veteran artists Tanya Evanson, Susan Cormier, Rowan Lipkovits, Duncan Shields. Laloge will be reading from her recently released book of poems “I Am A War”, and Duncan and Weslowski also be performing.

”The Candyman” - Daniel Mark Patterson is scheduled to take the stage as well.

“We’re thrilled by this line-up,” comments Laloge.

“It’s just like our show – very diverse, thought-provoking and yet just plain fun at the same time. It’s also nice to get out and meet the people who tune in and listen to us from time to time face to face.”

There will also be an open mic, a raffle and a meat draw. Yes a meat draw - just in time for Easter. Actually, co-producer Duncan admits that it’s really a Tofu Turkey Draw.

“Weslowski and I had to compromise on this one. I wanted a full on meat draw for a big chunk of meat, because I think it’s so kitch, and I’d love to win a piece of meat, But he was dead – excuse the pun – set against it, being a vegetarian.

“So I said I’d spring for the tofu turkey and he said he’d bring a rubber chicken.”

The show starts at 7:30pm at Cafe Deux Soleils (2096 Commercial Drive)

. All the money raised on April 7th will go to support Co Op Radio and keep Wax Poetic on the air. Memberships will be available.

One of the pioneers of the SLAM poetry scene in Canada, Andrea's performances are electric and unique – blending elements of jazz, dub, hip-hop and traditional literary verse into a style all her own. Re-creating mythological themes in a contemporary milieu, she offers her audience an invitation to return to the roots of the oral tradition through the elevation of spoken word to its ancient role as public ritual.Van Slam Grand Champion, Scruffmouth will be performing poems from his new book "The Seventh Sense".
He is also on the 2008 Vancouver Poetry Slam team and has been slamming, speaking the word, and performing dub poetry since 2004. "Faust McKenzie is the bastard child of short-lived love triangle between Bob, Doug, and Spuds McKenzie. In clinical trials, Faust outperformed all other major brands of cranial detergent, despite selling for half the price. Faust smells better up-close, regrets joining Facebook, and has a chapbook for sale entitled 'Faux Reals.'
"Sasha Langford was selected as one of five poets to represent Vancouver in the 2008 CBC Poetry Face Off, opened for Canadian Folk Music Award nominees the Fugitives as part of the 2007 Jewish Book Festival, was invited to perform at two Annual Sistahood Slams as part of Women's month, was the second runner up for the title of Women of the World Vancouver champion, graced the Vancouver Poetry Slam semi-finals stage, and featured at the Vancouver Poetry Slam, The Vancouver Youth Poetry Slam, the Spillious Speak 'n Sing and the Maple Ridge poetry slam both individually and as part of the Vancouver Youth Poetry Slam Team, all before the age of 19.

Wax Poetic: This Week - Clint "Father Goose" Wilson

Our guest on Wednesday at 2pm CFRO 102.7fm is Clint "Father Goose" Wilson. Clint calls himself...
... an otherworldly alien who was left here by the mother ship some 37 years ago. As he took the form of a man-child and learned the ways of the Earthlings he quickly realized that his two fortes were, rhyming and making people laugh. But beware, sometimes he gets tired of making them laugh and then simply goes into shocker mode and makes them, cry, scream, go yoik?, or simply run off towards the horizon with their eyes and ears bleeding, never to be seen again.

When not writing humorous poetry, Father Goose can be found writing sci-fi and fantasy, writing automotive magazine articles, selling used auto parts at his wrecking business in Chilliwack, carving leather art for motorcycle seats, saddlebags and the like (or poetry championship belts), pinstriping and engraving, playing bass or drums in several different combos, or having fun with his three half-breed children... yes, Father Goose mated with an Earth girl and his sensible yet hilarious kids are the crossbred result. Check out the Goose at an open mic event near you!
