Arts: New Art Centre For Kids Opens

The Pod, a new arts centre for kids opened in East Vancouver last month as Commercial Drive welcomes its newest arts hotspot, but this time it's for the kids. Perfect timing as with the recent cutback to arts and music programs, parents are faced with the challenge of finding high-quality art programs for their children. Now, parents need to look no further than The Pod.


The Pod is located in the artistic hub of Commercial Drive adjacent to the East Vancouver Cultural Centre (The Cultch), The Pod offers a diverse assortment of inspirational art programs for children aged 4 to 14 years.

Special Event: Eastside Culture Crawl 2007

It’s almost time for the 11th Annual Eastside Culture Crawl, and we’re participating once again. It’s so great to be part of such a huge studio open house event, which stretches from Vancouver’s waterfront and Main Street to Commercial Drive and First Avenue.

If you’ve never come out to the Crawl, it’s a great chance to meet artists in their own studios, and take in the huge amounts of creativity going on in Vancouver. This year’s dates are:

Special Event: Artful Sundays at Brit

Now in its 3rd year, Artful Sundays is an outdoor, multimedia, visul arts market, through the Britannia Community Centre in Napier Square (Napier at Commercial Drive). It runs for 6 Sundays, July 29-Sept 2, noon-5pm There are about 10 artists set up each week.
They also feature artist demonstrations and workshops, live music, "The Art Of Tea", etc etc. Tents, tables and chairs are provided. Artist fee is $20.00 and they also sponsor a few nonprofit groups. Some Highlights for this year are:

Aug 26 Vancouver Cooperative Radio Books and Records Fundraiser, noon-5pm

Sept 2, 2pm "Speaking Words Of Wisdom, a spoken word/poetry performance (they are still looking for a few participants for this, if you know of any spoken word performers please pass on my contact info)

Group Exhibition May 2 – 26

FEAST

In connection with the Stone Soup Festival, the Britannia Art Gallery is calling for submissions to artists, craftspeople and community groups for this special exhibition whose theme is inspired by the story of stone soup.

The story takes place during the great European famine in a village where even friends hid from each other, what little food they had. A visitor to their town, in a moment of creativity, dropped a stone into a cauldron of boiling water and began luring the villagers into contributing a share of what food they had hidden, until what was simply hot water turned into a feast for the whole village. The villagers were made to realize that by working together great good can be achieved. Today in a city as beautiful as Vancouver the food bank is no longer supporting just the homeless but also the working poor.

Criteria:

This call for submissions is restricted to those applicants who live or have a studio in the gallery’s catchment which stretches from the south shore of Burrard Inlet to Broadway; from Main St. to Nanaimo St. Professional and leisure artists, collectives and community groups may apply.

Applications and gallery floor plans are available at the Britannia Information Centre. The gallery is located in the Britannia library and consists of wall space and a locked display case. The space is a dual purpose space which also is the adult reading lounge. The gallery does not provide insurance coverage, frames, shipping. Because children also access the gallery artworks depicting nudity, explicit sexuality and overt violence are not accepted. Health and safety must also be taken into consideration. A small honourarium is paid to all successful exhibitors in the exhibition.

Images of your artwork: Up to 10 35 mm slide, colour photocopies, or colour photos

A short artist statement

A self addressed envelope stamped with sufficient postage for return of your materials.

The Britannia Art Gallery showcases the work of local artists in the newly renovated space in the Adult Lounge of the Library at Britannia Community Services Centre at 1661 Napier Street (at Commercial Drive) in Vancouver. Each month we show 2-dimensional work on the walls and 3-dimensional work in the display case. Interested community members are invited to attend an opening reception on the first Wednesday of each month from 6:30 to 8:30pm. Artists are usually in attendance making openings a great opportunity to talk to artists about their work. Openings are free and the public is welcome to attend. Catering by Open Sesame (with artistic flare inspired by each new exhibition's theme!) Watch for the posters!

The Second Sunday Program offers a public opportunity to hear artists give presentations, demonstrations and workshops. These events happen on the second Sunday of the month year 'round except when the gallery is closed for statutory holidays. Free to the public. Next talks:

Danielle Gauld's work, entitled "home is a scattering of wings across the sky..." will be exhibited from February 7th to March 3rd in the Britannia Gallery. In this talk, she will speak about the changes that have occurred in her photography since she moved to Vancouver two years ago. She came from a small town in Northwestern Ontario, trading the vast, sweeping expanses of water, trees and sky for the small, vivid moments of nature and beauty that make East Vancouver such a compelling place to live and work. Participants will have an opportunity to interact with the photographs and help shape the exhibition.

The email newsletter is produced and distributed twice monthly.

The Artery newsletter is primarily focused on supplying information to artist and art patrons on Vancouver's east side where the second highest density of artists in Canada live and/or work. The newsletter mandate is to support and promote the artists who live or have a studio within Britannia Centre's catchment area. Support takes the form of exhibition announcements, courses offered by the artists, special events featuring the artists. the Artery also supports and promotes the Gallery's activities to the general population in the catchment's area. Submissions can be sent by email to: harokano@telus.net or leave the information in the Gallery's in-box at the Britannia Information Centre (1661 Napier St., Vancouver, BC).
DEADLINES FOR SUBMISSIONS:
For events happening in the first half of the month you must submit information 7 days before the end of the previous month. For events happening in the last of the month, you must submit information by the 7th of that month. Please use the following format:
- Title of Event
- Name of artist(s)
- Dates/times
- Hours of access
- Contact information
- jpeg image resolution 72 ppi (optional)
- Description (maximum 25-50 words) optional
Submissions that do not follow the criteria are less likely to be accepted due to the growing amount of information submitted.
