Artist Talk: Archer Pechawis

The Artists in Our Midst Program presents

An Evening with Archer Pechawis
Tuesday, April 24, 2007
7 – 9 pm
free admission

Archer Pechawis is a media-integrated performing artist, New Media artist, writer, curator and
teacher. He has been creating solo performance works since 1984. His practice investigates
the intersection of Plains Cree culture and digital technology. Archer also works as a “First
Nations Stand-up Essayist” webmonkey, technician and MC.

Pechawis is fascinated with what he calls ‘transitional Cree culture’, the place where Cree
culture meets the onrush of millennial technology. He explores this fascination through
performance. He uses digital technologies in an attempt to locate and query this meeting
place, however fleeting. He describes his work as a temporary roadmap — signposts of
the moment, which he creates to share.

This special event takes place in the Conference Room of the Britannia Information Services Centre.

Workshop: The Art & Business of Blogging

One of the simplest ways to stay in touch with your fans or your client base is to have your own blog.

Whether you use it as an online journal or a marketing tool to sell your work or services, a blog is easy to create and maintain and doesn’t require you to know any special coding, like a website does.

A blog allows you to express yourself and to share ideas with potentially thousands of people.

Steven R. Duncan will show you how to have a blog up and running in just ten minutes and share some secrets to help drive traffic to it, and maybe even make some money from it!

Call For Submissions: Britannia Art Gallery

Deadline: March 31, 2007

Group Exhibition May 2 – 26

FEAST

In connection with the Stone Soup Festival, the Britannia Art Gallery is calling for submissions to artists, craftspeople and community groups for this special exhibition whose theme is inspired by the story of stone soup.

The story takes place during the great European famine in a village where even friends hid from each other, what little food they had. A visitor to their town, in a moment of creativity, dropped a stone into a cauldron of boiling water and began luring the villagers into contributing a share of what food they had hidden, until what was simply hot water turned into a feast for the whole village. The villagers were made to realize that by working together great good can be achieved. Today in a city as beautiful as Vancouver the food bank is no longer supporting just the homeless but also the working poor.

Criteria:

This call for submissions is restricted to those applicants who live or have a studio in the gallery’s catchment which stretches from the south shore of Burrard Inlet to Broadway; from Main St. to Nanaimo St. Professional and leisure artists, collectives and community groups may apply.

Applications and gallery floor plans are available at the Britannia Information Centre. The gallery is located in the Britannia library and consists of wall space and a locked display case. The space is a dual purpose space which also is the adult reading lounge. The gallery does not provide insurance coverage, frames, shipping. Because children also access the gallery artworks depicting nudity, explicit sexuality and overt violence are not accepted. Health and safety must also be taken into consideration. A small honourarium is paid to all successful exhibitors in the exhibition.

Send:

A proposal (500 words maximum)

Images of your artwork: Up to 10 35 mm slide, colour photocopies, or colour photos

A short artist statement

A self addressed envelope stamped with sufficient postage for return of your materials.

Drop off proposals to the Britannia Information Centre or send by mail to:
