Special Event: Zawa Fundraiser

"The Human Right's Tribunal has been trying to make a mockery of our right to free speech" claims comedy night host Carter Horte.
According to Hortie, the news-making tribunal has cost Sal,the owner of ZAWA (formerly Zestys) over 15 thousand dollars in legal fees... and still he provides a stage for comedians.
The venue has hosted comedy for 10 years, 7 of those years with the Laff Riot Girls, a show produced by two hard working and fun loving lesbian comics, Ardell Fitzpatrick and LeeAnn Keple.

The list of Canadian comics that had their first show ever at Zawa and then moved on to a career in Stand Up is huge.
Hortie is asking fans of comedy and comedians to show their support and come down to Zawa on April 29th for the best show the place has seen yet.

If you have ever set foot on the stage at Zawa as a comedian then you need to haul your friends down to this show and help fight for our freedom to go there every week and say what ever we want.

Comedy No Laughing Matter For Some Locals

Was it hate speech or freedom of expression?

The BC Human Rights Tribunal continues to hear evidence against a comedian who targetted lesbians at a show in Vancouver nearly three years ago.

A complaint was filed against Guy Earle and the owner of the now-closed Zesty's Restaurant by Lorna Pardy, a 32 year old woman who claims she suffered post traumatic stress disorder after Earle personally insulted her in front of an audience, then snapped her sunglasses in half.

Comedy: The Laugh Gallery @ Rime

You might think Vancouver comedian Graham Clark would avoid racetracks, given his allergy to horses. But Hastings Park is precisely where Clark chose to meet up with the Straight on a recent sunny Saturday afternoon. For the Alberta native, it's the perfect place to unwind after his visits to flea markets and yard sales in search of tacky prizes to give away at his weekly Wednesday-night comedy show, the Laugh Gallery, which takes place at Rime (1130 Commercial Drive).

And when you think about it, a day at the races makes perfect sense. Clark, an old soul at the age of 27, would fit right in with the Marx Brothers, with his ever-present vintage paperboy hat, Vandyke-ish facial hair, and quick wit. Even his alias fits: Groucho, Harpo, Chico, and Zeppo, meet Wannabo (a portmanteau of wannabe hobo), the moniker Clark uses on MySpace to differentiate himself from the millions of other Graham Clarks of the world.
