Music: Jesse Waldman February Artist-In-Residence @ Lime

Multi-talented Jesse Waldman is the artist residence for February at lime (formerly known as rime). What this means is he'll be performing there every Sunday in the many different projects I’m involved in. You can expect many fantastic delights including high-end sushi, drinky drinks, screaming girls, track lighting and of course, great music. Below is a detailed schedule of what's happening…

Sun Feb 3

lisa o’neill
lisa o’ neill acoustic guitar, vocals, jesse waldman - electric guitar and nick stecz – drums

Lisa O'Neill is a singer-songwriter from Vancouver, her music is an eclectic blend of Dreamy folk resulting in a style that is uniquely her own. It has been described as melodic, lyrical and deeply moving. Lisa's powerful lyrics radiate from deep within her soul and her inspired song-writing is filled with passion and grace.

monica lee band
monica lee – vocals, viola, acoustic guitar, marc l’esperance – drums, vocals and jesse waldman – electric guitar, vocals

Easy to listen to, hard to ignore, this prairie girl run away to the west coast will warm your heart, sooth the tired mind and get you out of your chair. The band's live sets are energetic, inspiring and intimate full of lush piano, soulful vocals, and warm viola, tight drumming and soaring guitars. Monica's voice is stirring, reminiscent of Carly Simon and Carole King, delivering a mixture of folk, blues and roots with gypsy overtones. Monica Lee is joined by the multi-talented Marc L'Espérance on drums and backup vocals, and the virtuosic guitar hero Jesse Waldman

Sun Feb 10

Supna
jesse waldman – acoustic guitar, Kenton loewen – drums, percussion, rup sidhu - didjeridoo, percussion, flute, pete shmitt – bass

Yes ladies and gentlemen, the legendary supna are returning to the stage for the 1st time in years. Supna is an instrumental group that incorporates many musical genres including middle eastern, flamenco, metal and funk and free improv.

Josh Martinez and the pissed-off wild
Josh Martinez – rapping, Kenton loewen – drums, pete shmitt – bass, jesse waldman – electric guitar

The Pissed Off Wild started as a beer, went around like reefer, and ended up passed out in the backyard under the picnic table with a empty quart of whiskey clutched in its hands and a huge smile on its face. All punk rock attitude, black humor and a rhythm section that just won't quit, these boys make The Supremes look like a bunch of chicks. Mixing 50's doowop, 60's drugs, 70's rock, 80's punk and 90's party rap with a post-Y2K love of the good times, The P.O.W. have established themselves as fusion phenoms wherever they play.

Sun Feb 17

electric kids
jesse waldman – acoustic/electric guitar, vocals, marc l’esperance – drums vocals, chris bizzochi – piano, keys, paul Surjadinata – bass, vocals

Jesse is a unique singer/songwriter who seems puts a touch of magic in his songs. This new project: electric kids has all you’ve come to expect from waldman: crafty, memorable songs, contagious melodies, sweet vocal harmonies, thumping rhythms and of course, wild guitars. These are mostly new songs people! This art-rock experience is sure to have you mesmerized and inspired.

jess hill
jess hill – acoustic guitar, vocals, jesse waldman – electric guitar

Like the intuition implied by synchronized movement, Jess Hill's music reminds you of something you thought you'd forgotten. Anchored in the tendencies of folk, blues and jazz, Jess tells stories: cyclones and downpours, hovering birds, white skies. In the dim light of midnight living rooms and in the hearts of singing shadows, Jess Hill is building something beautiful.

Beth southwell
Beth southwell – acoustic guitar, vocals, jesse waldman – electric guitar, wayne adams - drums

Beth Southwell is a singer songwriter that has travelled the world. She writes songs from her experiences of life and living. Her melodic, memorable songs speak of truths and relate easily to others. Bouncing along a BC highway without a care, sparks off the guardrail, rides the phatmobile. Bringing extra-terrestrial reggae songs of bingo, girls and palaces in the sky, phatty phatty is a true westcoast gem. Not only are these guys seasoned players and connoisseurs of the finer things in life, but they’re also psychedelic super heroes who may just save the world one day.

Comedy: The Laugh Gallery @ Rime

By Guy MacPherson

In his weekly showcase at Rime, local standup veteran Graham Clark would rather see the new and strange than the tried and true. Mark Mushet photo. In his weekly showcase at Rime, local standup veteran Graham Clark would rather see the new and strange than the tried and true. Mark Mushet photo.

You might think Vancouver comedian Graham Clark would avoid racetracks, given his allergy to horses. But Hastings Park is precisely where Clark chose to meet up with the Straight on a recent sunny Saturday afternoon. For the Alberta native, it's the perfect place to unwind after his visits to flea markets and yard sales in search of tacky prizes to give away at his weekly Wednesday-night comedy show, the Laugh Gallery, which takes place at Rime (1130 Commercial Drive).

And when you think about it, a day at the races makes perfect sense. Clark, an old soul at the age of 27, would fit right in with the Marx Brothers, with his ever-present vintage paperboy hat, Vandyke-ish facial hair, and quick wit. Even his alias fits: Groucho, Harpo, Chico, and Zeppo, meet Wannabo (a portmanteau of wannabe hobo), the moniker Clark uses on MySpace to differentiate himself from the millions of other Graham Clarks of the world.

Special Event: Conversation with Richard Rodriguez

Disunited We Stand: America's Diversity Is Its Strength

Author Richard Rodriguez.

A Latino writer probes his nation's mixed-up soul.

By Richard Rodriguez
Published: April 25, 2007

in the TheTyee.ca

[Editor's note: Award winning essayist Richard Rodriguez wrote this article a month after the attacks of September 11, 2001. Does he feel the same today? You can learn first hand tomorrow evening in Vancouver as he discusses his book Brown: The Last Discovery of America, a rich meditation on race and cultural politics in the New World. In conversation with Marcus Youssef, Thursday, April 26, 5 p.m., Rime Restaurant, 1130 Commercial Drive. Event is free.]

In peace time, America is the most original nation in the world. We are the maddest, most inventive; truly a splendid disorder are we. When America goes to war, we become a nation like any other.

Nowadays, I turn on TV and hear Americans gamely stumbling through the national anthem. At an intersection yesterday, I saw a Lexus carrying a socialite alongside a pickup with a kid who was absorbing the thump-thump-thump of rap music -- both cars wearing the stars and stripes.

Music: The Black Crow Project Presents 4 Evenings in May

A Fundraiser for the Portland Hotel Society

Location: Rime, 1130 Commercial Drive, Vancouver

Tickets: $10 at the door

Dates: May 6, 13, 21, 27 – 8:30 pm.

Featuring musical performances by: Mark Berube, Cora Fields, Jess Hill, Sarah MacDougall, Corbin Murdoch and the Nautical Miles, Parlour Steps, Pawnshop Diamond, Jessie Turner

You can hardly pick up a newspaper today in the Lower Mainland without reading about the dismal conditions of the homeless and hard to house. In fact, the region’s homeless population is on the rise, with the income gap between Vancouver’s rich and poor among the worst in the country. Aren’t you glad you have a safe place to sleep?

The Black Crow Project, developed in response to the basic needs of shelter and community for the less fortunate, is organized around a central belief that music is a powerful tool to reach across social boundaries. The arts, according to the organization’s founders, help communities find focus and belonging so they can constructively move towards common goals.

Katie Ormiston and Jessie Turner are the driving force behind the project. Last November, they, along with co-founder Nina Fleming, successfully launched “The Black Crow Project” as an arts fundraiser event for the Portland Hotel Society (PHS), one of Vancouver’s longest running and most respected organizations. It provides housing, service and advocacy for those in need. Says Ormiston, “I wanted a way to contribute positively to the issues surrounding homelessness. I often think about my own brother who suffers from a mental illness and where he would be if he didn’t have family. The Project also released a compilation CD by local musicians about the crows that fly over Vancouver.

Why the crows? The crows that fly together across East Vancouver each morning and evening have captivated Ormiston for years. “They are a symbol to me of all the potential Vancouver has to offer. More than the mountains or the ocean, when I watch these crows come together to fly home every night I am inspired to take part in this community and make it my home.”

For the month of May, the Black Crow Project will be “Artist in Residence” at East Vancouver’s Rime. Musicians from the project will perform along with a short talk by a Portland Hotel Society spokesperson. Fifty percent of cover and one hundred percent of profit from the compilation CD will be donated to the PHS. To find out more about the PHS call: 604-683-0073.

The Black Crow Project recording, rated as one of Highlife World Music’s Best of 2006, is also available for purchase at Highlife World Music, 1317 Commercial Drive, Vancouver.

Profile: Joanna Chapman-Smith

Joanna Chapman-Smith grew up with her New Zealand-born father, Italian-American mother, in a family of six on a quiet street on the edge of Toronto. Her father fell in love with the folk music of Eastern Canada when he came to Canada in 1983, singing his four children to sleep with these and the songs from his home every night. With the Toronto traffic rushing on in the distance, this is how Joanna learned music.

When Joanna moved out west to Vancouver, British Columbia - her music met a vast new array of cultural traditions. That was five years ago and since that time, Joanna has grown into her power as a singer and as a songwriter. In 2007 she released her first full-length album, Eyre Corvidae (Journey of the Crow Family). The songs in this collection are personal melodies, soothing rhythms and rocking laments. Influenced by a wide variety of traditions, her style is a satisfying blend of sounds. She ties her sound together with a unique vocal style that is sensitive and powerful. Joanna's love of music, and her joy of life come across in her music and voice. It is pure, passionate, and playful - as is her approach to music.

Find her music at http://www.joannacs.com or hear Joanna live with the Glee Club and friends Blue Island Trio, 30 Toes (Dance Company) and "Bad Poetry" by Melissa Bandura, Natalie Hobbs & Marnie Norwich
