Music: Opera Pro Cantanti @ the Wise Hall

Canada's only repertoire opera company calls the Wise Hall at Victoria and Adanac home, alternating 5 classical operas through its season.

On Tuesday, December 9th, 7:00 pm, they present our stirring new production of I Puritani. Bellini`s Bel Canto masterpiece, I Puritani is an English Civil War tale of political heroism, love, madness and lovers reunited. I Puritani was Bellini's last great melodic masterpiece. Come and hear Julie Duerichen in the role made famous by Callas and Sutherland.

Then on Sunday, December 14th they present a matinée (2:00 pm) performance of our much-loved Lucia di Lammermoor. With its famous mad scene, Lucia di Lammermoor is one of the crowning glories of the Bel Canto repertoire. Clan rivalry and family pride intersect with passionate love to create a compelling tragedy. The work is also the source of opera's most famous sextet and a number of its most famous arias.

Here's a small sample from their production of La Triviata.

Special Event: Some Make It Hot

Event: Friday, November 30th, 2007 - 9pm
Wise Hall
1882 Adanac Street
Vancouver, B.C.

Hipsters in need of a lusty revival at the onset of this year's winter blahs will find themselves presented with a welcome diversion at Vancouver's infamous Wise Hall this month - Malaika Millions and the Pink Flamingo Burlesque present "Some Make It Hot - A Mid-Winter Concert Cabaret of Hot Song, Dance and Comedy!"
Be amazed by the painstakingly-crafted costumes and choreography of Shaboobie Boobarella's Pink Flamingo Burlesque, and their vehicles of va-va-voom, the live swingin' Ginteels Sextet, led by Blue Morris and fronted by local vocalista Red. Boasting the hosting of local shimmy guru Malaika Millions and comedy cad Seth Little, who will add song to their repertoire while presenting new comedy and burlesque, this night is a shoo-in for setting off the fire alarms at the Wise. This svelte lineup also features the sultry import Vienna La Rouge. Musical guest Andrew R. Smith {of Sweet Pea Swing Band} will warm the cockles of the crowd and those familiar with the local DJ scene will enjoy the furry-handcuff-effect of DJ Steamboat Fattie linking the whole evening together with his subtle sonorific guidance.

Tittilating, no?

Be sure to pre-buy tickets ($15) and snap up the table reservations ($10) on offer to get the best seats on the house for a one of a kind sextravabonanza...remaining tickets will also be sold at the door.

News: Farmers' Market Proposed

Frances Bula, Vancouver Sun

Published: Saturday, November 10, 2007

A Vancouver group is trying to get city council permission to shut down one block on a street east of Commercial Drive every second Saturday during the winter for a farmers' market.

In a report going to council next Thursday, city staff are recommending the closure because the event would support the city's food action plan and its policy of trying to promote neighbourhood events.

Ed. The proposed block would be on the Adanac bike route in front of the WISE Hall.

A Call to Aid Malaika Millions' Fundraiser, Friday October 5th @ The Wise Hall

At the Intersection of "starving artist" and "chronic pain" lives a Beautiful Darling of a Dame who's tougher than a Silk Strand and still smoother.

If you've seen her Perform twice, you've probably seen her high on painkillers at least once. Lucky for her she's got typical ADD biochemistry, so luckily codeine has made her speedy and hyper productive. She's wittier when she's high and pain free, but she looks forward to just being Witty and Well.

When Macho Motorcycle Men dismay at the fact that she rides Motorcycle in the winter she quips back, " Riding motorcycle in the Rain, That's Easy. Riding with a full blown ovarian cyst, now that's Hard!"

She's suffered severe Endometriosis for years and after multiple surgical intervention attempts she's totally ready to get rid of the Torture Device. It hasn't only caused Mind Bending Pain, but impacts the immune system. This won't be a cure, but should alleviate a lot of the pain complications.

So she's throwing out the Uterus with the Bathwater ladies and gentlemen…. And What Better way to throw off the Sac like Shackle than to throw a Celebratory Party / Fundraiser on her Birthday! It's HAPPY BIRTHDAY, FUCK UTERUS ! Yes, Malaika Millions is getting a Hysterectomy.

Music: Mark Berube / Roger Dean Young and The Tin Cup

(9 pm, $10)

Revered alt-roots musician, Copperspine recording artist Roger Dean Young & The Tin Cup play beautifully sparse, quiet, poignant music. Roger Dean Young guitar, vocals; Chris Rippin guitar, piano; Shaun Brodie trumpet; Cary Pratt drums

www.tincupmusic.com

At 9 years old, he was among a dancing crowd of 10,000 watching the late South African pop star Brenda Fassie at Somhlolo Soccer Stadium in Swaziland. With apartheid still strong next door in South Africa, this concert reverberated on many levels: musically, socially, and politically. Mix this life-defining experience with Manitoban-Quebecois roots, a stylistically diverse musical repertoire, the piano, accordion, guitar and a voice that disarms his audiences, and you have the multi-faceted sound of Mark Berube.
