Literary: Crackerjack Lipsmacker Youth Slam #43 with Justin McGrail

Time
Monday, July 25 · 8:00pm - 10:30pm

Location
Cafe Deux Soleils
2096 Commercial Drive
Vancouver, British Columbia
What kind of words does the summer bring? Tales of relaxation, summer school, love in the heart of it all? Or something completely different? Come find out what the youth are talking about at this month's Youth Poetry Slam. It's open to all poets 13-22 years of age.

This month we continue to feature poets from the 1996 Vancouver Poetry Slam Team...the team that started it all...Van Slam is 15 years old this year.

Our featured poet is Justin McGrail

• First forays into spoken word came through a series of house “Performance Parties” in Montreal (BYOA – bring your own art)

• Was considered too old (at 26) for the poetry stages of Lollapalooza, 1994

• Co-authored “Fluffy Pagan Echoes: Resistance is Reasonable”, a feature length spoken word performance for five voices, presented at the Montreal Fringe Festival, 1995

• Once landed a performance contract with Lancome Cosmetics for the promotion of Poeme, a perfume that launched in 1996. Along with recitations in the cosmetics section of Eaton’s in Vancouver, and other promo appearances, this contract called for extensive brooding and use of waist-coats and poetry-shirts

The Youth Poetry Slam and open mic is open to all poets 13-22 years of age. All styles of poetry are welcome.

Sign up begins at 7pm. Show starts at 8 o'clock.

$3 for 18 and under. $6 for everyone else.

Review: Poet Slams Slam Finals

Prominent spoken word artist CJ Leon wrote this frank review
There is something seriously wrong with the slam scene in Vancouver when even its flagship Slam Finals event, which filled the Rio Theatre to capacity last night, fails to inspire even its most enthusiastic patrons. It didn’t help that while one slam-masters’ name was chanted seven times throughout the evening, none of the performing poets’ names were even in the program! While I appreciate the work of organizers, I go for the art and the artists. Fuck the Vancouver Slam for continuing to go out of its way to anonymize the artists who make it what it is. Bad form! You gave us a 14-page program and didn't even mention the artists, let alone give us their bios and links. Fuck you and your egomania! The lighting of the venue was horrible: no spotlight, and I was told the cadaverous hue of the performers was caused by event organizers who wanted the headache-inducing bluish “cleaning lights” on so poets could read their poems. Boo! And since when do slam poets read? Gimme a fucking break! I didn’t pay $15 to sit in Walmart lighting.

Slam Poet Koyczan Bends 2 Billion Ears at Olympics

East Van spoken Word enthusiasts got an unexpected treat last night during the opening cerimonies of the 2010 Winter Games, when local slam poetry legend Shane Koyczan wowed the crowd with his inspirational poem "We Are More".  The ceremonies drew a record audience, thanks to the internet.  Here's another version of the poem compliments of YouTube.

For those of you on Facebook, my buddy Paul Fischer did a great video mashup using this piece.  Very worth checking out.

In addition to slam poetry and spoken word, Scruffmouth is an avid writer, thinker, and dub poet. Book Launch

Slam Poetry Pioneer
ALEXANDRA OLIVER
Returns to Lauch her New Book

with special guest
RC Weslowski

Date: Friday, May 11, 2007
Time: 6pm
Location: Forufera Centre
Mezz Level, 505 Hamilton Street (map)http://www.forufera.com/rental.html

The London, England-based Tin Press is up and running with a witty new collection, Where the English Housewife Shines, by performance poet Alexandra Oliver. “We are pleased to present Alexandra because her work is right up our alley,” says Tin Press co-founder Justine Brown.
“On the page, she is as playful and entertaining as she is in performance.” With her dramatic bearing, perfect enunciation and distinctive literary style, Oliver has been a strong presence in the spoken-word scene since its birth in the 1990s, often appearing in “slams” (live poetry competitions). In 1996 she won a place on Vancouver’s slam team, representing the city at the US National Poetry Slam. She is featured in the 1998 documentary Slam Nation.
She moved to Seattle in 2006, and has appeared at spoken-word venues there regularly. “I am an unrepentant neo-classicist,” laughs Oliver. Her work rhymes and has meter—qualities rare enough in the contemporary poetry world to be controversial. But audiences love Oliver’s highly crafted black-comical poems. Like other members of the artist-run Tin Press, Oliver wants to do more than provide the text. She is interested in other aspects of book production, specifically how books look and feel. Oliver has contributed pen-and-ink drawings to Where the English Housewife Shines, and worked closely with the London designer. “Artist-run presses are ideal for writers who care deeply about the physical aspects of the book. New technologies like print-on-demand allow us maximum control,” says Brown. “It’s a whole new model for publishing in the arts.”

Alexandra Oliver will read from Where the English Housewife Shines at Forufera on Friday night following a performance by local slam legend, RC Weslowski.
For more information, please contact Steven R. Duncan 604-788-8340 srduncan@shaw.ca

Listen to Wax Poetic on 102.7 fm Wednesday, May 9th at 2pm for a special, live interview with Oliver and Weslowski.

Literary: Poetry Impresario Weslowski Hits Front Page

April 4, 2007
Three minutes and a microphone
By DHARM MAKWANA, 24 HOURS

Commercial Drive's Cafe Deux Soleils is the spot where poets zealously deliver stanzas with surgical precision. There, this past Monday night, the city's finest wordsmiths took to the stage and slammed.

Slam poetry is part punchy prose and part personal confession with a three-minute time limit.

Host and slam poet R.C. Weslowski describes the Vancouver Poetry Slam as a competitive, interactive, democratic, performance poetry event. For the audience it's a night to engage performers who aggressively vie for their support.

"You get to come in and you don't just sit there on your hands quietly, you get to cheer and boo or shout out," Weslowski says. "We encourage that sort of raucousness for the audience."

Under the slam's rules, each poet is given the same amount of time to perform a piece, typically from memory. Sitting in the rowdy crowd are five randomly selected judges who use gut reactions to score each act from 1 to 10. Score sheets are held in the air as slam fans voice their opinions until the poet finishing with the highest average score is crowned champion.

Where Are They Now: James McAuliffe

If you were a poet in Vancouver in the mid-90's, James P. McAuliffe will be a familiar name to you. His deep, resonating voice (both literally and metaphorically speaking) was unmistakable and unforgetable. Leaving Ontario to settle here, he immediately hit the ground running and began producing several poetry readings around East Vancouver.
I call him the grand daddy of slam poetry because, along several other poets like Graham Olds and Justin McGrail (and myself), he was instrumental in building and sending the first slam team down to Portland, Oregon back in the mid 90's.
The success of the recent Individual World Poetry Slam, shows that McAuliffe was on the right path.
Currently he lives back East, where he is the Creative director for Hideout Press (http://hideoutpress.ca/) - A publication dedicated to helping independent writers.
His work is currently spotlighted on the blog Hammered Out.
McAuliffe is married and the father of 4 children.

Keep an eye out on this blog for a profile on Alexandra Oliver, a member of the first team that went down to Portland, back in 1996.
